Lets start with the first graphs of our fisrt 4 letters from the English alphabet – A, B, C, D . For the letter C there are 2 graphs one is for carrot and one for cherry. You can use whatever you wish.

  • A- Apple – I chose that fruit because it is known in each country and it is loved by most of the kids. It will be a good choice with which your kid can associate the letter “ A ”. You can make it in different background and instead of red you can make it with green or yellow color depends on you and on your yarn stash.

Yarn used – I used Stylecraft Special dk and Paintbox Simply Dk yarns- I will give you each color I used in each square.

HOW TO READ THE GRAPHIC – WHERE TO START, HOW TO KEEP TRACK OF YOUR WORK.

When we use corner to corner we work in diagonal rows. Usually we start from bottom right corner and work through up left corner . When you start your work and make your first 2 rows put a stitch marker on your Right side – RS so when you work you won’t make mistake which row you are crocheting.

If you don’t put a stitch a marker to indicate which side is the Right side facing you you can make a mistake and start your row from up instead of down bottom part . For example if you are crocheting row 6 you can see in the picture bellow with the graph that you must start from  right side crocheting downward not from bottom left side crocheting upward.

There are two ways of instruction for the c2c – corner to corner crochet technique .

1st way –  Graphic instruction with graphical picture chart . If you use that way you will count the box of the graph and change the color depending on the colors in your graph.

2nd way – written instruction – here the instructions are written. Colors of the blocks are written as how many block you should make with different colors . For example Row 5: 2B , 2, 1B – here it means that you should make 2 blocks with brown color yarn, then switch to white and make 2 blocks, switch to brown color and make 1 block .

If you prefer to use 1st method with printed chart it will be very easier for you if you strikethrough your finished rows as it is shown in the graph picture bellow so you will keep track of your rows. Just remember which side is your front side that is right side facing you as when we make the eyes of the fruits and vegetables it won’t be reversible . At the beginning when I made the first two squares I made mistakes few times when I used that method. But I guess that if I had the written instructions it would have been easier to make the squares as you don’t need to count because somebody have already made that for you J .

See How to change colors and how to make the  letters, eyes and mouth here.

How to change color in corner to corner crochet technique.

When you use corner to corner crochet for your project you will see that the items made with it are reversible. To keep them reversible we must change colors using change color technique.  If you wish you can carry the yarn as you crochet but then the blanket will not be reversible any longer.

Change color-

  1. When you make your last double crochet stitch before you sl.st in tch do not complete last yo of dc
  2. Instead yo with new color, pull through the loops.
  3. st in tch, ch 3
  4. Complete as usual

Sometimes you will need to finish one row with color A, and then immediately start the next with color B , when you work in your increase colors you must change colors before the last yo of your last dc as was shown in the pictures above.

When you need that color change you should make it as shown in the picture bellow :

HOW TO JOIN C2C CROCHET SQUARES

In this project i am making 28 different corner to corner squares that we will join after we finish them . It is the best way as the project is really big and when we work with small squares it is easier because each square is made using 3-4 different colors of yarn which is more easy to work with otherwise the yarn can tangle and it is very annoying.

When we complete our squares we will join them with sl.st in back loops of both squares  but first we will make border of squares with white yarn and then join them all together .

Border of c2c squares ( white yarn )-:

Row 1 : Insert your hook in any of the corners 1 st ( I inserted mine in up left corner ), pull a loop and make sc 1, ch 2, sc 1 all in the same st that we have inserted our hook.- this will form our corner

Ch 2, skip 1 block and make sc 1 in the space between the two blocks, repeat all around till you get to the corner – in the corner make again sc 1, ch 2, sc 1 , join with sl.st in 1st sc st.

Row 2 : Ch 3, dc 1, ch 2, dc 2 in the corner ch-2 sp , make 2 dc in each of next ch-2 sp, in the corner make 2 dc , ch 2, dc 2 to form the corner .

HOW TO MAKE EYES AND LETTERS .

We will use embroidery basic chain stitch to make the letters and lines that gives the fruit and vegetables more realistic look . I used this in some of my vegetables as iceberg lettuce for example . In the graph the lines that you should make are colored with dark colors . For example iceberg lettuce square .

How to make basic embroidery chain stitch – Insert the needle from point A to point B as you see there is a circle formed and the needle is inside the circle now pull the needle and insert it in the point B and pull it from point C .

Make the mouth of each fruit or vegetable using the same method you can make it as big as you wish in different shape – crying, smiling, wondering .

I made some of the eyes separately and then sew them on the fruits just because I forgot to make them when I was crocheting the fruit as I haven’t  made  the graphs before I start the blanket . I made the graphs as I crochet. At the end I realized that it is easier to make the eyes separately and then sew them on the fruits as you do not need to cut the yarn and attach the black yarn to make the black block of c2c which is going to be your eye. Actually it is easier and I think more esthetic  if you sew them .

Here is how to make the eyes :

1st way to make the eyes  –  White part – Start with magic ring, secure with slip knot , ch2 and make 10 dc into the ring, join with sl.st in 2nd ch of beg ch-2.

Black part – Start with magic ring and make 7 sc into the ring , join with sl.st in 1st st .

Sew the black part onto the white and then make sparkle with the white color yarn .

2nd way to make the eye – Start with black color yarn

Rd 1:  Make magic ring and 6 sc into it.

Rd 2: Switch to white color yarn – ch2, hdc in base of initial ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around , join with sl.st in 2nd ch of beg ch-2.

There are 1 post for each 4 letters – which are our 1 row of the ABC blanket that will be available each week . You can see the first 4 letter’s graphs – which are A- apple , B- broccoli, C- carrot and cherry, D- dewberry and dragon fruit – here .

The basic steps of c2c ( increase , decrease ) you can find here.

Corner to corner ( c2c ) – ABC blanket tutorial .

Basic essential to c2c crochet technique.

Corner to Corner crochet technique was a technique that I wanted to try since I saw Sarah’s from Repeat crafter me beautiful lamb c2c blanket . She has really amazing designs with c2c technique.

There are several blankets that are stunning and you should definitely check them out :

  1. Christmas blanket of Sarah from Repeat crafter me
  2. Christmas blanket of Jess from Make & Do Crew
  3. Solar system c2c blanket of Bethany from Whistle and Ivy
  4. Zodiacs c2c blanket of Chi Wei from One dog woof.

When I saw these blankets I thought that it would be nice if I can make a blanket that has its own theme and ta da dah I designed my ABC- fruits and vegetables blanket. I chose the ABC theme as I have a 5-years-old daughter which is going to be pre-school next year. This blanket can make learning the alphabet funnier. I must admit that while making that blanket I have learned so much new information and new kinds of fruits and vegetables.

Here in Bulgaria, Europe we don’t have all the fruits as people in USA , Australia and other countries. I learned names of different fruits that I know but never needed to use while speaking English – such as quince, fig , dewberry . While searching and choosing the fruits and vegetables which I will use in the blanket I found and learned new kinds of them. I haven’t heart for dragon fruit, jack fruit, ugly fruit.

I used most common known fruits and vegetables that are known in almost everywhere around the globe such as – tomatoes, grape, lemon, carrot and etc. That’s why I will post 2 graphs for some of the letters so you will be able to choose which to use.

Let’s begin.

HOW TO INCREASE AND DECREASE IN C2C TECHNIQUE – The basic of c2c crochet technique

In c2c crochet technique we always start with increasing the rows till the desired length and then start to decrease. As I made my blanket design using 28 squares each for the 26 letters from the English alphabet and 2 blank made with solid color. We will increase till the 18 row and then we will start to decrease. If you wish to make a different shape such as rectangle using that technique you will have to increase by 1 side and decrease from the other side . I don’t have a rectangle design yet but you can check  Make & Do Crew “ Nordic super scarf “ here – https://makeanddocrew.com/nordic-crochet-super-scarf-pattern/ .

C2c technique is very simple and when you learn how to make the fisrt 2 rows you will know how to make your own c2c blanket or pillow cover or whatever you wish.

In c2c we work in diagonal rows . In each row we will have different number of blocks that are the same as your row count. For example in 1 row we have  1 block, in 2 row we have 2 blocks, in 3 row we have 3 blocks.

Row 1:

  1. Start with slip knot and ch 6 .
  2. Make 1 dc in 4th ch from hook.
  3. Make dc in next 2 sts. Turn .

We have the first block made.

Continue to row 2 .

  1. Ch 6,
  2. Turn, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook
  3. 1dc in next 2 sts

This is 1st block of row 2.

  1. Insert the hook in the space between the tch and dc and join with sl.st.
  2. Ch3, 1dc in 4th ch from hook , 1dc in next 2 sts.

Row 3 and beyond :

Repeat  steps 4- 8 .

Start with ch 6, turn, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 2 sts, sl.st in tch , * ch 3, 3 dc in tch , sl.st in tch * rep 2 times- as you see in row 3 we have 3 blocks. When you work using c2c technique we increase till we reach the tallest side of our graph. In my ABC blanket squares we will increase till row 18 .

HOW TO DECREASE IN CORNER TO CORNER CROCHET TECHNIQUE

When you make your last increase row. You should start decreasing

–  to decrease we will turn our work and

  1. make sl.st in each of 3 sts of the block that we just have made in the prev rd.
  2. st in tch
  3. Ch 3
  4. Dc 3 in tch, sl.st in next tch to join , continue as usual with, ch3, dc 3 .

How to read the graphics and how to change colors you can find here.

Crochet blanket pattern

Follow your heart baby blanket is a good description of my moto follow your heart… I saw that heart chain in one youtube video and I wished to make something with it. It took me so much time I have thrown the blanket sample as a WIP a few times , but as a good friend of mine is used to say – there is right time for everything… So one day i woke up and get my heart blanket on my hook again … and this is the final result. I hope that you will really enjoy making this blanket. It really works up very quickly I made my heart chains just in 1 night ( maybe I was just too eager for the result). As I said I really enjoyed making these heart chains and I have a few more projects with them… Happy crochet…

Tips and advice:
1. Read the pattern carefully , look at the pictures and it will be more understandable if
something is not easy to understand.
2. If you wish you can make this blanket from scrap yarn, the heart chain is not yarn
consuming.
3. If you use different kind of yarn or different weight there will be difference and the
heart chains length may vary even if there are same number of hearts.

Start with making the heart chains
I made my blanket with 31 hearts on each chain. If you wish you can make your heart chain with more or less hearts it depends on your yarn weight and your hook. If you use worsted weight or aran weight yarn your hearts will be bigger and then you will need 20-25 hearts to meet the measurements you need your blanket to be. Or if you use baby weight or fingering or even sport but you crochet tighter you will need to make your chain with 35-40 hearts.

Heart chain pattern:
Start with ch3, Insert the hook in the 3rd ch from hook and pull a loop, * YO and pull a loop* rep 5 times, you should have 11 loops on your hook , now pull through the hook the first 2 loops, * YO , pull through the hook 3 of the loops* rep 4 times, Now you should have 2 loops left in your hook , get the loops out of the hook and turn your work , now insert the loops on your hook again, YO and pull loops through the hook. YO, insert the hook in the 1st ch of the ch-3 we made in the beginning, * YO and pull a loop* rep 5 times, You should have 13 loops on your hook, now pull through the hook the first 2 loops, * YO, pull through the hook 3 of the loops* rep 5 times, now you should have 2 loops left in your hook ,YO and pull the 2 loops through the hook – the first heart is done.

2nd heart and all after it are made the same — >
Now continue with the second heart-

Ch2, and insert the hook in the 2 loops stitch that we have finished our prev heart as shown in the picture bellow:

And now just repeat the same steps as the first heart – * YO and pull a loop* rep 5 times, you should have 11 loops on your hook , now pull through the hook the first 2 loops, * YO , pull through the hook 3 of the loops* rep 4 times, Now you should have 2 loops left in your hook , get the loops out of the hook and turn your work , now insert the loops on your hook again, YO and pull loops through the hook. YO, insert the hook in the center loop of the heart, * YO and pull a loop* rep 5 times, You should have 13 loops on your hook, now pull through the hook the first 2 loops, * YO, pull through the hook 3 of the loops* rep 5 times, now you should have 2 loops left in your hook, YO and pull the 2 loops through the hook .
Making the heart chain in pictures:
Heart 1 ->

The left side of heart : Insert the hook in the 1st st of the beg ch-3 – it is the center of the
heart .In the picture bellow it is shown with needle where to insert the hook .

Heart 2 in pictures :

Make as many heart chain as you wish . I used 16 different color heart chains. Please
consider that after we join the heart chains it will be 1,5inc= 4cm for each color sequence.
So if you would like your blanket to be 80cm height you should have 19 heart chains =
19x4cm = 76cm + border it will be 80-82cm height.
Make you’re the heart chain that you will use for your first color last so we can directly
continue with joining chains without cutting the yarn .

Paw patrol granny squares- puppie blanket

Paw patrol granny squares- puppie blanket

Why I did these paw patrol granny square – simple question and more simple answer – my daughter . She is 5 years old but she used to watch Nickelodeon and Baby tv since she was 12 months old. This paw patrol movie and all of the Nickelodeon ones played a big role in my baby’s language learning path.

And guess what – Paw patrol was and still is one of her favorite cartoons. So I thought that there were so many children as mine that adores these cute puppies crew and wanted to share my design with you.  I made 6 basic puppies granny squares- Marshall, Skye, Zuma, Rubble, Rocky and Chase. I used baby blue, lime and candy pink for main color of my granny squares but I think if I would make a blanket it will be in baby blue. I am just in love with the way that these browns look in blue.

I will give you granny square which last round is made with chain spaces and it could be difficult for some of you to join them so before join them you can add one more round make it the same way as the 2nd and 4th rd of the square even in different color and after that just join the squares with easy single crochet join method or slip stitch in back loops only method. My idea for the blanket is ( if I am going to make one- and I will probably ) to make the puppy squares in different colors and then join them with grey or white yarn. I hope that you will like making them and hope that your little ones will be just in love with their new blanket… So let’s begin .

Materials used :

DK weight cotton/acryl yarn in these colors – light brown, cream, dark brown, white , grey , black, blue, yellow, red, pink, purple, green,— these are for the puppies heads and hats . You can use whatever color you like for the granny square part I used dk weight yarn in yellow, pink and baby blue.

For the eyes we will need a small amount of thicker yarn I used fingering weight , you could also use sport weight yarn- in white, brown, blue, purple .

Crochet hook size 3,5mm – US hook size E – for the whole granny square

Crochet hook size 3mm- US hook size C- 2,75mm  – for the eyes of puppies

Tapestry needle , scissors .

Abbreviations :

Sc- single crochet    dc- double crochet     tr- triple crochet  hdc – half double crochet

Ch- chain          st(s) –stitch(es)                ch-sp – chain space             sl.st – slip stitch

Special stitches and tips :

If the number is written:

in front of the stitch – 3 hdc = work 3 hdc into the same stitch

after the stitch – hdc 3 = work hdc into next 3 stitches.

Row st – each row is counted as 1 st, we will make a stitch around the post of each 1st or last st of the rows of head.

Working between stitches – work the indicated stitch in the space between the stitches of prev round .

Eyes : Black part — >Start with magic circle and make 7 sc into the circle , join with sl.st in 1st sc to form a circle.

White part — >Start with magic circle, secure with slip knot , ch2, 11dc into the circle, join with sl.st in 2nd ch of beg ch-2.

Grey part — > Rd1: Start with magic circle, secure with slip knot , ch2, 11dc into the circle, join with sl.st in 2nd ch of beg ch-2.

Rd 2: ch1,* 2sc in next st, 1sc in next st* rep 5 times, 2sc in last st , join with sl.st in 1st ch of beg ch-1.

Leave long tale after each part for sewing. Use a tapestry needle and white string or yarn and make the sparkle of the eye .

I made it as a straight line as you see in the pictures. If you wish you can make the eyes without the grey part as in the picture bellow.

If you make them only with white and black use the pattern of the grey part for the white and the white part pattern for the black part.

Nose– make it with orange yarn . Use tapestry needle and just make it as  shown in the picture.

 Feet ( 2 pieces ) — > Make them with orange yarn.

Insert the hook in the st, pull a loop and ch1, then make 1 picot, and sl.st in same st, * 1picot, 1sl.st in same st * rep 2 times , End .

Blocking – depending on the yarn weight and the fiber you may need to block your square. You will need small pins and a block like children play mat or you can pin them like me on the carpet. After you pin the square spill warm water with spray bottle and leave it to dry.

Sew the eyes and your rainbow owl granny square is done… Have a happy crochet …

FREE PATTERN BABY BLANKET INSPIRED BY ANGRY BIRDS PART 3

FREE PATTERN BABY BLANKET INSPIRED BY ANGRY BIRDS PART 3

Free pattern of ANGRY BIRDS inspired baby blanket part 3

When we start a blanket or another project always want to see the finished product of our imagination.

I think most of the crocheters have the same feeling as mine. So in this third part of our blanket I will show you how to join and finish the blanket by the easiest way.

Take some yarn and hook and lest start 🙂

This is the third part  of our little baby blanket inspired by angry birds movie.

I hope all of you had the chance to see my earlier post and hope you like and enjoy crocheting with me.

Lets start joining our blanket and make the border to finish it.

If you still haven’t seen my earlier post you can check them  here part 1 and  part 2.

For joining I prefer slip stitch in back loop method .

It is flat join that is not invisible but barely visible and if you make a colorful blanket, afghan I think it is good to keep the joining simple.

Turn the squares with the RS facing each other and insert the hook in the back loops of the both squares sts, pull a loop and continue with making single crochet stitch in the back loop of the sts to join the squares .

First join rows and then just join the columns or first join the columns and then join the rows .

Border :

Rd 1 : Insert the hook in one random st and pull a loop , ch 2 , dc in next st , make dc in each st around , join with sl.st in 2nd ch of beg ch-2 .

Corner — > Make ( 2 dc, ch 2 , 2 dc in the ch-3 sp ) .

Rd 2 : Ch 4 , skip 1 st , 1 dc in next st , * ch 1 , skip 1 st , 1 dc in next st * repeat all around , in the end ch 1 , join with sl.st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4 .

Corner– > In the corner make ( 1 dc , ch 3, 1 dc all in corner ch-1 sp )  .

Rd 3 : Ch 4 , 1 dc in first ch-1 sp , * ch 1 , skip 1 st , 1 dc in next ch-1 sp * rep all around , at the end ch 1 , join with sl.st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4 .

Corner — > Make ( 1 dc , ch 3 , 1 dc in corner ch-3 sp )

Rd 4 :  * Skip 1 ch-1 sp , make 7dc in next ch-1 sp , skip 1 ch-1 sp , sl.st in next ch-1 sp * repeat all around .

Depending on where you have startd your border from there are two ways to make the corners.

1st way — > You will make 7dc in corner ch-3 sp .

2nd way of the corner — > You will make sl.st in the corner ch-3 sp and you will have ( 7dc st ) on the left and right side of the corner .
