The first addition to this year’s crochet Gnome-Along are the cutest crochet mini bear gnomes! Over the last year, we have made more than 40+ different gnomes and I can say it was a bit challenging to design something new.

However, thanks to all of you who voted in for the theme of the gnome along, the first gnome pattern is an animal- the bear family.

CROCHET TERMS: The pattern is written in US crochet terms!

CONSTRUCTION: For the bear gnome we will start from the base and continue to crochet towards the head! We will crochet the bear in one piece.

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner/ Easy

FINAL MEASUREMENTS: 15cm/ 6 inches

Materials you will need:

  • – Sport/ fine weight yarn- Yarn Art Jeans 55% cotton, 45% acryl, 50 g, 160 m
    colors- white 5 gr, yellow 5gr, brown 20gr or beige 20gr,
  •  crochet hook size 2.5mm
  • fiberfill for stuffing
  • tapestry needle

Stitch Abbreviation:

SC- single crochet

DC- double crochet

SS- slip stitch

CH- chain

Ch-sp – chain space

Rep- repeat

** – repeat the stitches in the ** indicated times

FO- fasten off

BLO- back loop only

FLO- front loop only

Special stitch:

Reverse Single Crochet (Crab stitch)- Crochet single crochet stitches in the opposite direction than you normally crochet, from left to right, if you are right handed. If you have your crochet hook in the left hand, you will work from right to left.

Pattern notes:

  1. The pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  2. The pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join your rounds.
  3. We will use a no sew technique and the only parts to sew will be the ears and the nose.
  4. For the no-sew technique, we will start with the hands and beard/braids. Afterward, we will crochet the body and attach the hands and beard/braids as we crochet along.
  5. The initial CH 2 or 3 is not counted as a stitch unless stated otherwise.
  6. If you use a different weight of yarn, keep in mind that your gnome will turn out bigger or smaller.
  7. If you are crocheting loosely, use a smaller hook so your work will be tighter and the stuffing won’t be visible.
  8. When stuffing the body- stuff it well, so it will stay in shape, but don’t overdo it.

CROCHET BEAR GNOME PATTERN:

Bear gnome’s muzzle:

-with beige/cream color yarn

Rnd 1: Start with a MR and make 6 SC into it. (6)

Rnd 2: 2 SC in each stitch around (12)

Rnd 3: *SC in first, inc 1* 6 times (18)

Rnd 4-5: SC in each stitch around (18)

Stuff the muzzle a little with the fiberfill. Don’t overdo it!

Rnd 6: *SC in next, dec 1* 6 times. FO. (12)

Take a piece of black color yarn and a tapestry needle to form the nose. Make a small triangle on top center and then a straight line downward.

Bear gnome’s beard:

-with white color yarn

Rnd 1: Start with a MR and make 6 SC into it (6)

Rnd 2: SC in each stitch around (6)

Rnd 3: *inc 1* 6 times (12)

Rnd 4: *SC in next 5, inc 1 * 2 times (14)

Rnd 5: * SC in next 6, inc 1 * 2 times (16)

Rnd 6: * SC in next 7, inc 1* 2 times (18)

Rnd 7: *SC in next 8, inc 1* 2 times (20)

Rnd 8: *SC in next 9, inc 1* 2 times (22)

Rnd 9: *SC in next 10, inc 1* 2 times (24)

Rnd 10-13: SC in each stitch around (24)

Rnd 14: *SC in next 10, dec 1* 2 times. FO. (22)

Bear Gnome’s hands (make 2 pieces):

-with a beige/cream color

Rnd 1: Start with a MR, and make 6 SC into it (6)

Rnd 2: *inc 1* 6 times (12)

Rnd 3-6: SC in each stitch around (12)

Switch to brown color

Rnd 7-16: SC in each stitch around (12)

Bear Gnome’s braid base (for the girl):

-with yellow color (make 2)

CH 5, SC in 2nd from your hook, SC across. FO (4)

Bear Gnome’s Body:

-with brown color

Rnd 1: Start with a MR, and make 8 SC into it. (8)

Rnd 2: * inc 1* 8 times (16)

Rnd 3: * SC 1, inc 1* 8 times (24)

Rnd 4: * SC 2, inc 1 * 8 times (32)

Rnd 5: * SC 3, inc 1 * 8 times (40)

Rnd 6: * SC 4, inc 1 * 8 times (48)

Rnd 7: * SC 5, inc 1 * 8 times (56)

Placing cardboard (OPTIONAL)

Before we continue, we need to measure our base and cut the cardboard. Place your crochet piece in the center of the cardboard and use a pen to draw a circle. Draw the circle around the crochet piece and then cut it. While cutting the cardboard, cut it a bit smaller, so it will not stick out.

The next round is worked in BLO. Only next round!

Rnd 8: SC in each stitch around (56)

Rnd 9-25: SC in each stitch around (56)

Rnd 26: *SC in next 12, dec 1* 4 times (52)

In the next round, we will join the hands and hair for the girl or the hands and beard for the boy.

In the pictures below you will see how to attach the hands and other parts.

First, fold your piece (hand or beard) and align your stitches.

Then insert your hook through the first stitch on your right corner(make sure to go through both layers of your piece) and then insert it through the next stitch of your body and make a SC. Repeat till the whole piece is attached.

For the girl the next round is worked as follows:

Rnd 27: SC in next 3, attach first hand and work SC over the next 6, attach braid’s base and work SC over the next 4, SC in next 9, attach second braid’s base and work SC over the next 4, attach second hand and work SC over the next 6, SC in remaining sts across (52)

For the boy, the next round is worked as follows:

Rnd 27: SC in next 3, attach hands and work SC over the next 6, SC in next 3, attach the beard and work SC over the next 11, SC in next 3, attach second hand and work SC over the next 6, SC in remaining sts across (52)

Rnd 28: SC in each stitch around (52)

The next round is worked in BLO. Only the next round!

Rnd 29: SC in each stitch around (52)

Rnd 30-32: SC in each stitch around (52)

Take your nose and sew it onto the beard if you are making a boy or sew it in the middle between the braids bases if you are making a she-gnome.

Rnd 33-37: SC in each stitch around (52)

Rnd 38: *SC in next 11, dec 1* 4 times (48)

Rnd 39: *SC in next 6, dec 1* 6 times (42)

Start filling the body and continue doing so as you crochet along.

Rnd 40: *SC in next 5, dec 1* 6 times (36)

Rnd 41: *SC in next 4, dec 1* 6 times (30)

Rnd 42: *SC in next 3, dec 1* 6 times (24)

Rnd 43: *SC in next 2, dec 1* 6 times (18)

Rnd 44: *SC in next, dec 1* 6 times (12)

Rnd 45: *dec 1* 6 times (6)

Close the gap with a tapestry needle. Go through the front loops of each stitch and pull tight to close.

Bear gnome hat’s brim:

Rnd 1: Go back to round 29 and insert your hook in any stitch, pull a loop and make SC in the same stitch, SC in next 2, inc 1, *SC in next 3, inc 1* rep 12 times (65)

Rnd 2: SC in each stitch around (65)

Rnd 3: *SC in next 4, inc 1* 13 times (78)

Rnd 4: *SC in next 5, inc 1* 13 times (91)

Rnd 5: Reverse SC(crab stitch) in each stitch around, SS in first to join (91)

How to make the braids for she-gnome:

Take yellow color yarn and wrap it around a cardboard/book/piece of plastic with 12-14cm height. Make around 20-25 wraps.

Cut from one side and take off the wraps. You will have 20-25 folded pieces. Take 3-4 and pull them from the middle with your hook through the first stitch of your braids base that we have already attached to the body. Then insert the open side of the strings through the loop to secure them.

Repeat this for each stitch of the braid’s base. Braid and tie them.

Bear Gnome’s Ears

-with brown/beige color

The initial Ch 2 or 3 is not counted as a stitch

Rnd 1: Start with a MR, secure with a knot, CH 2, make 10 DC into the ring, SS to join. (10)

Rnd 2: CH 3, 2 DC in each stitch around, SS to join (20)

Rnd 3: CH 2, HDC in each stitch around (20)

Fold to have a flat semi-circle piece.

She-Gnome Skirt:

-with pink color yarn

Rnd 1: CH 57, DC in 3rd from your hook, DC in each stitch across, SS to join. (55)

Rnd 2: CH 3, skip 1, *5 DC in next, skip 2* rep across, SS to join (18 shells of 5 dc)

Rnd 3: CH 3, skip 2, *6 DC in next, skip 4* rep till you have 2 sts left, SS to join (18 shells of 6 dc)

Crochet Flower applique for the she-gnome:

-with color A (I used yellow color)

Rnd 1: Start with a MR, secure with a knot, CH 2, make 12 DC into it, SS to join (12)

Attach color B (I used pink). Don’t fasten off the yellow color

The next round is worked in BLO!

Rnd 2: *CH 3, DC in next 2, CH 3, SS in same * rep 6 times, take your color A and place your yarn to you’re the front of your work and SS in the first chain of initial ch-3. FO color B.

Take color A again and insert your hook in the first front loop on the left and pull a loop, *ch 4, SS in next front loop* rep around, SS in first to join. FO.
