Crochet headband

The design + inspiration

This year was full of new experiences and new designs that I have never tried crocheting before. This crochet ear warmer/ headband is one of them. You can check the knit look crochet ear warmer pattern as well.

While searching for crochet stitches for my crochet Christmas stocking, I came upon this set of simple, easy stitches, and you can keep track of them without putting so much effort.

The stitches work up pretty quickly and are perfect for this small project. The texture is so cozy, and I love that the pattern looks complicated, but it is very simple in reality. If you prefer a video tutorial instead of written instructions you can watch it HERE

The yarn

For this crochet ear warmer/ headband pattern, I used Lionbrand Scarfie yarn, which I had in my stash for quite some time and have used before to make a crochet cowl.

I can say that I immediately fell in love with this yarn as it is just soft, squishy, works pretty good with textured stitches, and has an ombre effect that requires not switching colors, and in the end, you have two ends to weave in. It is marked as bulky weight yarn on the label, but in my opinion, it is more like worsted weight yarn.

I reworked this pattern using Bernat premium yarn as I wanted to give you another yarn suggestions which you can use to make the crochet ear warmer/ headband.

I made it without changing my hook or stitches, and the final crochet ear warmer/ headband turned out to measure the same. In the pattern section below in the post, I have included notes on adjusting the pattern for yarns’ different weights.

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn

For the crochet ear warmer sample, I used Lionbrand Scarfie yarn, which is labeled as bulky, but in my opinion, it is more like worsted weight yarn. You can also use Bernat Premium solid yarn

You need 50gr -70gr depending on the size

Hook size 6mm/ US crochet hook size J

Tapestry needle

Pair of scissors

Abbreviations:

St(s)- stitch(es)

Ch(s)-chains(s)

dc-double crochet

rnd- round

sl.st – slip stitch

hdc- half double crochet

FPcl- front post double crochet cluster. See special stitch section below.

SPECIAL STITCHES:

WORKING IN 3RD LOOP OF HDC– When we make the hdc stitch, we have the regular front loop and back loop of the stitch, but we also have a 3rd loop in the back of the stitch. This is the loop in which we will work.

FPcl – Front post double crochet cluster – YO, insert your hook from front to back to front around the post (vertical bar) of specified st and draw up a loop; YO and draw through 2 loops; YO, insert hook again from front to back to front around post of the same stitch and draw up a loop; YO and draw through 2 loops; YO and draw through 3 loops; FPcl made. Watch the video tutorial.

Gauge – 1inc x 1 inc:

3 sts x 2 rows

Half double crochet stitch

Pattern notes:

  1. The pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  2. The crochet ear warmer is worked in an oval shape. After we make the foundation chain and worked across it, we will turn and continue working on the opposite side.
  3. The increases in this pattern are made only on the oval sides. The middle section is worked without an increase. When we increase, we will make dc 1, FPcl 1 both in the same st.

Pattern Adjustment

The essential point is the foundation chain- it must be an uneven number, and when we work the first stitches in the 4th chain, we will have an even number of stitches in the end. The pattern requires multiple of 2 sts when making your foundation chain pay attention to your numbers.

The foundation chain must measure 2 inches lesser than the band’s required length, as when we finish the headband, we will have 5 inches added as it is worked in rounds as an oval piece. For example, for adult size foundation chain is 16 inches, and when it is finished it measures 21 inches. When we make the twist, the final ear warmer measures 20 inches, which is the regular length for an adult headband.
