The nature surrounding us is so magical and has so many beautiful, big and glorious animals. I have mastered my crochet in blankets and for the last year I really got into crocheting appliques. Crochet applique gives my imagination and crochet the field I need to challenge myself and expand my creativity. This appliques are cute and funny way to finish your crochet baby blanket. It is magical how we can recreate something with only crochet hook and piece of yarn. The appliques can be also used to decorate crochet hats , bags and tops or whatever crochet or non-crochet project you can think of.

The inspiration:

When I want to crochet an applique themed blanket I usually go on google and search for cute animal cliparts or cute fruits cliparts depending on what am I  going to make. Then I choose a style I like and start crocheting the applique implementing my way of seeing this applique. Sometimes you need to frog and redo it but no worries It is very common among designers. And here I am to share with you and save you time, my sweet appliques that you can make. It is better when it is shared, right ?

Each applique will be shared separately to be easier for you to get the pattern because this one is really long one.  We have 9  crochet appliques – Koala applique , Lion applique , Panda applique , Hippo , Rhino , Elephant , Parrot applique Sloth applique and Crocodile applique. As you know we have so much applique themed blanket and we really appreciate your positive feedback for all of them. If this is your first visit here I am sure you will like our Jungle friends appliques baby blanket / Undersea Sweetness appliques blanket or / Forest friends appliques blanket

The Yarn :

For all my applique I always prefer thinner yarn. The crochet Appliques have so much details and this way it is easier to crochet and attach them. Of course you can use different weight yarn but my suggestion is category 3 weight yarn, DK ( double knit ).

The yarn:

I usually make my appliques with DK(double knit) weight yarn which is medium weight yarn. It is ideal for making small projects such as appliques which are made with so much deatils. When you use thinner yarn the appliques will turn perfect size for medium square like 8 x 8 inches and you still will be able to use this appliques for bigger and smaller squares. I usually make bigger squares and place my appliques in center of the square. In the design process I try different yarns and sometimes I make my test applique with sport weight yarn which is slightly thinner than DK and when switch to DK and try the final piece the parts can be unproportional. Keep in mind this when you start applique you have bought the pattern of or you follow a free pattern. It is better to use similar yarn in weight.

 Materials:

  • Yarn : Acrylic DK weight yarn -I used Stylecraft Special DK yarn-100gr/322yds/295m

In colors – Grey and medium cream colors, white and black

  • Crochet hook size 3,5mm- US hook size E
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle

NOTES:

When you finish all parts of appliques, lay them on flat surface and use pins to secure them on right place. It is very important to pin the appliques before sewing so you will know exactly how it will look when you sew it on your project. When you like the layout off your appliques you can sew it on your crochet project.

If you will use the appliques on granny square blanket, sew the appliques onto the squares then join the granny squares into blanket. It will be easier to do and the applique will be more accurately placed.
