Are you new to crocheting amigurumi?

Let’s explain a little. Crochet amigurumi is basically a Japanese technique to crochet stuffed toys. The main stitch we use is a single crochet stitch. So, if you can crochet this stitch, you can crochet almost any beginner amigurumi pattern.

And the Santa mini gnome pattern is perfect to start with. Firstly, in this pattern, you will learn how to crochet the basic shape of amigurumi, how to increase, and how to invisible decrease stitches for shaping amigurumi. Secondly, you will master how to change colors and how to work in the back loops only.

The most important thing is that the pattern is small in size, making it perfect to practice the freshly learned skills.

Why crochet a mini Santa gnome?

For 2023, we hosted a gnome CAL ( crochet along ), where we shared free gnome patterns each month. Firstly, the intention was to share one free gnome pattern each month, but guess what?

In the end, we ended up with more than 40 free gnome patterns. And if you check our Facebook group, filled with so many talented crafters, you will see that there are people who crocheted almost all of the gnomes.

And said this way, displaying them in one place is really hard. That’s why we decided to crochet mini versions, at least for the Christmas collection. The first mini version we shared recently was the free mini Christmas tree gnome pattern.

So, if you would like a smaller version for your gnomes with a few color changes, you can crochet most of the patterns from the CAL without any size adjustments.

If you would like to try more free crochet patterns for beginners, try the bear amigurumi and the bunny amigurumi patterns, which do not require any sewing. Because they do not require sewing for any parts, the patterns are perfect for beginners and advanced beginners. The velvet yarn makes the projects quick to finish due to its super bulky weight.

The best yarn for crochet mini gnomes

In the Facebook group, we received many questions about what type of yarn is best for crochet mini gnomes. Here are some suggestions:

  1. I am using sport-weight yarn and a 2.5 mm crochet hook, so your minis will be the same size if you have the same weight yarn.
  2. You can use DK weight yarn and smaller crochet hooks like 2.25 mm and 2.5 mm; you will get almost the same size as mine.
  3. Try to crochet with smoother yarn, like anti-pilling acrylic or 100% cotton yarn. These types of yarns have better stitch definitions than the others.

Pattern notes:

  1. The pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  2. The pattern is worked in one piece. We start from the hat and continue on the body.
  3. The pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join your rounds.
  4. If you use a different yarn weight, remember that your gnome will turn out bigger or smaller.
  5. I suggest you use a fine/sport or DK weight yarn with a 2.25-2.5mm hook to achieve the size.
  6. When stuffing the body- stuff it well so that it will stay in shape, but don’t overdo it. You can still insert cardboard in the base to make it flat, but it will also stay still without it.
  7. Some pictures are from the previous pattern. Pay attention to the color written, not the picture.
