Crochet “Rosemary” blanket- made with granny stitch and decorated with puff stitches
An easy crochet blanket with old stitch made in new fun way – Rosemary crochet blanket is a free pattern on our blog. Here you will find how we get inspired, our design process and how we choose the perfect yarn for this project…

Have you ever had a yarn which you keep till you have the perfect project for it. I have at least 50 cake yarns in my stash that I bought with such excitement but when I tried making something with them I never liked the finished project. If you check my previous designs or if you are just following us for quite some time you know that I am a big fan of colors and the main idea of grabbing 50 cake yarns was just that 1 ball contains so much beaty in it. And just a few days ago I found a stitch that was used for a triangle scarf and decided to make it in square and this is how the Rosemary blanket was born. I like the colors and the texture of this blanket . The puff stitch make it so fluffy and cozy- perfect to snuggle up yourself or beloved ones in.

The yarn:
To be honest when I crochet granny stitch I really like the colorful look of it which is the main idea for me to use Cake yarn for this blanket.
- With cake yarns we save time ( there is no ends to weave in )
- We don’t spent time choosing the perfect color combinations ( it is done by itself )
- With 1 ball we can crochet a decent size baby blanket
So if you still have never tried crocheting with cake yarns than you definitely should give it a shot. You will be surprised how easy and fun it is. For this blanket I used cake yarn – 150gr/540metres 100% acrylic – You can use whatever cake or self-striped yarn you have in your stash it depends all to you. You can even use solid colors and make it 1 colored or just switch between a few colors. The cake yarn I used is mil end yarn which is the same as the normal cake yarns but the color changes are different and sometimes not as smooth as the original ones. You can check Lionbrand website for all the beautiful colors in their cake yarn collections with different yarn weight and different fiber content.
The blanket itself is made using granny stitch in 1 round and puff stitches in other round. The pattern is 2 rounds repeat and it is really very easy. You don’t need to count stitches or to follow a pattern, you can crochet in your couch in front of your TV..

Materials:
- 1 and half cake yarn or approximately 250gr of DK weight yarn/ light worsted- I used mill end cake yarn = which means has been spoon in the same color but in different order of colors than the usual colorway.
- For the border I used Lionbrand pound of love yarn- it is worsted weight yarn by label but it fitted the cake yarn perfectly.
- Crochet hook size 4,5mm
- Finished measurements are – 30inches x 30 inches
Special stitches:
Granny stitch cluster- make 3 dc into the indicated stitch or chain space.
Usually the puff stitch is made with 5 YO but in this pattern I made my puff stitch with 3 YO.
Puff stitch – Yarn over and insert the hook into the stitch where you are creating your puff stitch. Yarn over again and draw through. There will be three loops on the hook.Repeat 2 more times. Each time adds 2 more loops to the hook. There will be 7 loops on the hook for puff stitch.
Puff2tog – Make 2 puff stitches together. Here si a little trick- The first puff stitch is made in the same ch-sp and the 2nd puff of our Puff2tog is made into the next ch-sp.
Tips: When we work the puff stitch round everytime when we begin our rnd we will make the 1st puff of our Puff2tog in the prev ch-sp which is the last ch-sp of our prev granny stitch rnd. And when we continue the round we will make the Puff2tog as follow- Make 1st puff in the same ch-sp then skip the granny cluster and make the 2nd puff in next ch-sp.
For those who learn better from video tutorials we made a step-by-step tutorial for you as well.
First rnd starts with MR if you don’t know how to make it you can start with ch 5, join with sl.st in 5th ch from hook to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Start with MR, secure with slip knot, make *1 granny cluster, ch 2 into the ring * rep from * to * 4 times, join with sl.st on top of 1st st. (you should have 4 clusters)
Rnd 2: ch 3, * Puff2tog, ch 1, (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc in same ch-sp) * rep from * to * 4 times, join with sl.st in 3rd ch of initial ch-3. (you should have 4 Puff2tog)
Rnd 3: ch 1, *1 cluster on top of Pufftog we made in prev rnd, ch 1, skip 2 sts, (1 cluster, ch 2, 1 cluster in corner ch-sp), skip 2 sts, ch 1 * rep from * to * 4 times, join with sl.st on top of 1st st. (you should have additional 1 cluster on each side between the corners)
Rnd 4: ch 3, { *Puff2tog, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-sp * rep from * to * 2 times, ch 2, 2 dc in same corner ch-sp, Puff2tog, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-sp } rep from { to } 4 times, join with sl.st in 3rd ch of initial ch-3.
Rnd 5: ch 1, { * 1 cluster on top of first puff st, skip 2 sts * rep from * to * 2 times, ch 1, (1 cluster, ch 2, 1 cluster in corner ch-sp), ch 1, skip 2 sts, 1 cluster on top of next puff st ch 1 } rep from { to } 4 times, join with sl.st on top of 1st st.
Rnd 6: ch 3, { * Puff2tog, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-sp * rep from * to * 3 times, ch 2, 2 dc in same corner ch-sp, *Puff2tog, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-sp * rep from * to * 2 times } rep from { to } 4 times, join with sl.st in 3rd ch of initial ch-3.
Now we just continue our pattern by alternating rnd 5 and rnd 6 till you reach your desired size. With every additional rnd you will just have additional cluster that you need to work the Puff2tog.
BORDER:
Rnd 1: ch1,{ *dc4tog on top of puff st, dc in next 2 sts * rep till you reach corner ch-sp, in the corner make (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) } rep till the end of the round, join with sl.st on top of 1st st.
Rnd 2-4: ch 2, * hdc in each st till your reach your corner space. In the corner make (2hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc ) * rep till the end of the round.
Abbreviation:
dc-double crochet ch-sp = chain space MR- magic ring cluster – granny stitch cluster- see special stitches above
YO- yarn over dc4tog- work 4 double crochet together ( )- work the stitches in the ( ) all in 1 ch-sp or stitch
** – repeat the stitches between the ** indicated times { } – repeat the stitch sequince between the { } indicated times
