The crochet Cupcake gnome is part of the summer gnome collection we created for our crochet gnome-along.
In the summer gnome collection, you will find 4 different gnomes- The Ice Cream gnome, The Watermelon gnome, the Beach gnome, and last but not least the Cupcake gnome.
The design:
As a designer, it may happen to have a designer block. After several attempts of crocheting an ice cream gnome, I almost gave up. Fortunately, my daughter offered to lend me a hand and draw me an ice cream gnome.
So I grabbed my yarn and hook and started crocheting.
Nevertheless, it was supposed to be an ice cream gnome, it ended up more like a cupcake gnome.
But here are a few tricks on how to turn your gnome into an ice cream.
Instead of a cherry, you can add a mini crochet ball as a second scoop of ice cream.
Cupcake gnome pattern overview
I love upgrading my patterns and teaching you new skills and techniques.
The new skill in this pattern is working with front post stitches. The post stitches may intimidate you but I can bet that once you try them you will see how easy it is to work them.
Is this pattern beginner-friendly?
The only difficult part of the cupcake gnome is the body. In the body, I used front post single crochet which is not a beginner stitch. But you can just replace the front post stitches with regular single crochet.

Cupcake gnome pattern notes:
The pattern is written in US crochet terms.
We will crochet the cupcake gnome in one piece starting from the hat to the body. Afterward, we will add the beads and cherry on top as well as the nose, and hands.
I didn’t use a beard or hair for the gnome but if you wish to crochet a beard you can use the Watermelon gnome beard pattern.
I used sport weight 100% mercerized cotton yarn. I suggest you use a similar yarn. If you cannot find it you can use fine weight or DK weight yarn with a smaller hook such as 2.25mm or 2.5mm.

Some yarns that I would recommend: are Stylecraft Special DK, Paintbox Simply DK, and Hobbii Cotton 8/4.
The final measurement is 14cm/ 5.4 inches
Materials you’ll need:
– Sport/ fine weight yarn- Shachenmayr Catania 100% Cotton, 50 g, 125 m
colors-Light brown color (179-camel) 20gr, white color (106) 20gr, a small amount of Beige and red for the nose, and cherry
– crochet hook size 2.5mm
– Poly fiber fill for stuffing
– tapestry needle
Stitch abbreviation:
SC- single crochet
DC- double crochet
SS- slip stitch
CH- chain
Rep- repeat
Inc- increase
Dec- decrease
MR- magic ring
HDC- half double crochet
– repeat the stitches in the ** indicated times
FO- fasten off
BLO- back loop only

Continue repeating rnd 25 and 26 alternating them till you reach round 36

How to join your gnome parts:
- Sew the nose onto the body right below the brim.
- Sew the hands on both sides. Leave 6-7 stitches between the nose and hands.
- Sew some colorful beads to resemble sprinkles or just use different colors of yarn and make small stripes.
- Use a safety pin to secure them before sewing. Sew them when you like the placement.
