Darth Vader ( Marvel ) – Star Wars

Darth Vader ( Marvel ) – Star Wars

Happy 2018 year.

This is our first post and I hope that we will have more and more than 2017 to share with you.I couldn’t find time to watch new Star Wars movie but I really like this little man- Darth Vader ( Marvel ). As an offspring of the technological  era, most of the kids know him and love to watch movies, cartoons or play games of the franchise.             When I heard that the new Star Wars movie is live just decide to crochet one of the main characters so Darth Vader( Marvel ) you can use it as a key chain for the kids or as an accessory for their bags. Of course as I told you before these days I am a bit obsessed with rag doll patterns which are super easy and fun to make. So let’s start.

Materials needed :

  1. Dk weight yarn –
  2. I used  Stylecraft Special DK or :
  3. Paintbox Simply DK ( 101 )- Pure Black – main body, hands
  4. Paintbox Simply DK yarns ( 105)- Slate Grey
  5. Crochet hook size – 3,5mm – US crochet hook size – E
  6. Poly fiber fill for stuffing
  7. Tapestry needle
  8. Scissors

Darth Vader  ragdoll is made using single crochet stitch. When we incorporate different colors the stitches will be indicated with the letter of the color from the color legend bellow:

Color Legend :

G – grey ( Slate Grey )          BL- black color ( Pure Black )

The doll is made of 8 parts that we will join later with single crochet stitch as our other ragdolls .

Darth Vader doll front body panels .

The doll is made of flat pieces that we will join with single crochet stitch later. The Santa Claus doll is made of 6 panels – 2 for body and 4 for hands.

Tips and tricks of the patterns :

  1. Color changing – When you switch colors do it always before you finish your last st of the previous color yarn, Just change color before your last YO of previous st and YO with new color then pull through the hook with the new yarn . Here is example with colors – insert your hook into the last stitch of Color A. Pull up a loop in Color A. Then yarn over in Color B to complete the stitch. Continue with Color B until you need to switch again. When you change color make sure that you are dropping the yarn in the back of your panel if you wish you can put a stitch marker of the Right side of the panel or piece of string so you will never wonder which one is the correct side.
    1. Incorporating different colors – You can use fair isle crochet technique when changing colors or you can just pull them from back without cutting yarn. Just be sure that you keep the yarn at the backside of panel. In the pattern when we make the head we will need to work different color stitches of some rows. The whole pattern is made using single crochet stitch so when we incorporate different colors the stitches will be indicated with the letter of the color . For example – “ 6W, 12CR , 6W ” – so it means that you should make first 6 stitches with White color, the next 12 with Cream , and last 6 with White color. When it says “ decW” – it means you should decrease with white color yarn .
    2. Do not forget – Make ch 1 and  turn at the end of each row.
  2. Let”s get starting :

    Front body panel :

Body and head panel . Front panel is worked from row 1 til row 63.

Start with black color yarn .

    Rd 1: Ch 5, sc 4 ( 4 sts )

    Rd 2: inc, sc 2, inc ( 6 sts )

    Rd 3-4: sc across ( 6 sts )

    Rd 5: inc, sc 4, inc ( 8 sts )

    Rd 6-16: sc across ( 8 sts )

Tie off. Repeat the rows 1-16 but do not tie off. Now you will have two pieces that we will join together in next row as in the picture bellow:

Rd 17: inc in 1st st of 1st leg, sc 7 across then continue on the 2nd leg piece, sc 7, inc in last st of 2nd leg piece ( 18 sts )

Rd 18: sc across ( 18 sts )

Rd 19: inc, sc 16, inc ( 20 sts )

Rd 20- 23: sc across ( 20 sts )

Switch to grey color. Rows 24-26 are worked in grey.

Rd 24-26:  sc across ( 20 sts )

Switch to black color yarn. Rows 27-63 are worked in black.

Rd 27: sc across ( 20 sts )

Rd 28: dec, sc 16, dec ( 18 sts )

Rd 29-30: sc across ( 18 sts )

Now we will start incorporating grey color and black. Stitches will be indicated with the letter of the color from the color legend.

Rd 31: decBL, 2BL, 10G, 2BL, decBL ( 16 sts )

Rd 32-34: 3BL, 10G, 3BL ( 16 sts )

Rd 35: decBL, 1BL, 10G, 1BL, decBL ( 14 sts )

Tie off the grey yarn and continue with black yarn color. Rows 36-41 are worked in black color yarn. Stitches will be indicated with sc st.

Rd 36: sc across ( 14 sts )

Rd 37: dec, sc 10, dec ( 12 sts )

Rd 38-39: sc across ( 12 sts )

Now we will start the head.

Rd 40: Ch 4, sc 3 along chs , sc 12 along prev row ( 15 sts )

Rd 41: Ch 4, inc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in rem 2 chs, switch to grey color, sc 12 along prev row, switch back to black color, sc 2, inc in last st ( 20 sts )

Now we will incorporate grey and black stitches to form the mask of Darth Vader . Now instead of the sc- there will be the letter of the color that you should use. You can find the corresponding letter and color in the Color legend.

Make the finishing touches before you join together front and back panels.

  1. Insert the eyes in the 49th row in the middle of the black spot. I used black felt fabric in ellipse form, inserted the eyes through the felt and then put them onto the head. If you wish you can used only felt without safety eyes.
  2. Make the buttons on the grey body rectangle with yellow, red and green yarn.

3. Sew the black line of the helmet just above the eyes as in the picture bellow.

Back panel of helmet . Before you sew it on head fold both side. Fold the right side from right to left and the left side from left to right. Sew them.

Sew back of helmet to the 51st row .

Assembling pieces together. It doesn’t matter where you will start assembling  .

When you join two body panels make sure that the right side of front panel is facing you while you are crocheting with single crochet stitch around .

As you crochet along the outside, you will need to switch colours where appropriate. When switching colours, insert your hook into the last stitch of Colour A. Pull up a loop in Colour A. Then yarn over in Colour B to complete the stitch. Continue with Colour B until you need to switch again.

Stuffing – Stuf the toy when you crochet along . When you go around the leg with sc fill it.
