Sharing is caring!

The crochet giraffe granny square is the 3rd one of our Mix and Match blanket. You can make it individually as a big crochet granny square or use the 4 squares and create the mix and match blanket.

Crochet Giraffe granny square pattern

Materials

  • worsted weight acrylic yarn- main color-yellow for the Giraffe and the rounds between the colorful ones. You will need 2-2,5 balls of white. My yarn was 100gr/240m per ball.
  • 20-40 grams of the remaining colors
  • Crochet hook size 5mm and 6mm. The smaller hook for the embellishments such as eyes and 6mm for the blanket itself. But you can also use one hook.
  • tapestry needle and a pair of scissors

Pattern notes

Finished size of the blanket is 90cm x 90cm/ 36 inch x 36 inch.

The pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

Gauge: 12 stitches and 8 rows = 4 inches
in double crochet. The gauge is not important in this project.

The beginning chain is not counted as a stitch unless stated otherwise.

After the initial square is done we will continue with granny stitch rounds, BUT we will make the granny cluster with wide DC which means we will work in the space between the clusters instead of on top of the stitch and it will be referred as “space”.

Crochet stitches
In this crochet blanket, we have a few parts that must be sewn on the square. Usually, I prefer a hot glue gun or glue. I use appliques in many of my designs so I made a video tutorial with 3 different ways of attaching appliques to a crochet project- tutorial on How to attach appliques!

How to attach the crochet giraffe’s embellishments:

  1. Take 2 small dots and sew them onto the 2nd round of the muzzle’s beige part. Place them on both sides.
  2. Sew the muzzle right on the center, and place it a bit down so half of the beige part will be below the yellow circle base.
  3. Place the ears on both sides. Make sure that they are symmetrical before sewing or gluing.
  4. Place the eyes right above the muzzle’s beige part on both sides.
  5. Take the big and small dots and place them around the face. You can place them wherever you wish.
  6. Take the horns and place them between the ears leaving 1-2 stitches between them.

When you are done with your crochet giraffe square base it is time to turn this square into a blanket. To do so you need to repeat the instructions of Granny square part 2. You will find them in the Crochet Tiger blanket post.
