What is the perfect yarn for this 3 in 1 scarf?
I used Scarfie by Lion Brand yarn for this scarf in color pink/silver, which is bulky-weight yarn. It’s a blend of 78% acrylic and 22% wool, making it perfect for cold days. Plus, it’s machine washable, making it easy to maintain and ideal for gifting.
Because of this yarn’s unique self-striping ombré effect, you don’t need to worry about color combos, which can sometimes be hard to choose.
Yarn substitution
You can use any bulky weight yarn or a double strand of light worsted category 3 yarn. The quantity needed will double if you use double-strand light worsted yarn. But as the gauge is not essential, you can use any yarn you have in your stash.
How to customize and make adjustments for the scarf
To adjust this scarf pattern, you can make it shorter by crocheting fewer rows or narrower by starting with fewer chains. You can also make the cowl’s height shorter if you don’t like it to fold double around your neck. Also, if you want to make the scarf for a child’s size, make the cowl smaller by starting with fewer chains and crocheting fewer rows. Don’t forget to adjust the scarf length as well.

The 3 in 1 turtleneck hoodie scarf pattern
The gauge is not essential for this scarf. If you can’t meet the gauge provided, work the number of stitches and rows required to match the final measurement provided for the cowl and the scarf.
Materials
- Bulky weight yarn I used Lion Brand Scarfie in color pink/silver,78% Acrylic, 22% Wool, 150 gr/5.3 oz, 285m/312yds. The total amount needed is around 410 gr or 2 and half balls.
- 6 mm/ US J-10 crochet hook
- tapestry needle
- measuring tape
Abbreviation
ch(s)-chain(s)
sl st- slip stitch
sc- single crochet
st(s)- stitch(es)
dc- double crochet
rep- repeat
**- repeat the stitches in the ** indicated times
Gauge
11 sts x 7.5 rows = 10 cm/4 inch in the pattern repeat
Sizes
This pattern is written for adult size.
Measurements
As the scarf is made from two rectangles, here are the measurements for both—the cowl and the scarf.
Adult size The cowl’s rectangle measures 9.8” x 19.5”, and the scarf’s rectangle 14” x 70”.

Pattern notes
Obtaining the final measurements for the cowl and the scarf itself is essential. So, if you have a different gauge than mine, just measure the final two rectangles before sewing.
The pattern is super easy to adjust for different sizes. If you need to change the child’s size, make the cowl rectangle narrower and the scarf length shorter. The adult size will fit most women.
If you use a different yarn, remember to switch the crochet hook size. It is important to have a nice drape for the scarf, so if you are a tight crocheter, use a bigger hook.
Now let’s start with the pattern itself.
Scarf
Start with a [ch44]
Row 1: 1 DC in 4th ch from the hook( counts as the 1st DC), DC in each st across. ( you should have [42] sts in total.
Row 2: CH 1(count as sl.st), turn, skip the very 1 st , DC in next st, * SL ST in next st, DC in next st* rep from * to * till the last 2 sts, make SL ST in next st, DC in 3 rd ch of trng ch-3
Row 3: CH 2(count as dc), turn, skip the very 1st st, DC in each st till the end, DC in 1st ch of turning ch-1. Repeat alternating row 2-3 till you reach 180 cm or 68 more times. Or repeat alternating rows 2-3 until you reach your desired length.. I finished the scarf with dc row. Fasten off.
Cowl
Row 1: Ch30, 1 DC in 4th ch from the hook, 1 DC in each st across, (28 sts)
Row 2: CH 1(count as SL ST), turn, skip the very 1 st st, DC in next st, *SL ST in next st, DC in next st* rep from * to * till the last 2 sts, make SL ST in next st, DC in 3 rd ch of trng ch-3 (28 sts in total)
Row 3: ch 2(count as dc), turn, skip the very 1st st, DC in each st till the end, DC in 1st ch of turning ch-1 (28 sts in total)
Repeat alternating rows 2-3 till you reach 50 cm or 20 more times. I finished the cowl with row 2. Fasten off and leave a longer tail for sewing. ( around 50 cm )
How to assembly the scarf
Step 1: Sew the cowl
- Fold the cowl rectangle in half and sew both sides using a tapestry needle. The end result will be a tubular/cylinder shape.
Step 2: Attach the cowl to the scarf
- Fold the scarf in half with the wrong side facing you.
- Turn the cowl with the wrong side and place the cowl next to the folded scarf.
- Be sure that the back seam of the cowl matches the folded line of the scarf.
- Place a stitch marker to the scarf as shown with the blue dot. ( This step is optional )
Step 3: Sew the cowl around the scarf
- Take a tapestry needle and start sewing the first half of the cowl to the scarf. Start at the back seam of the cowl ( the orange dot ) and continue till you reach the stitch marker.
- Then continue sewing the other half of the cowl till you reach the back seam. Fasten off. Leave the ends in.
