Graduation season is coming up, and what better way to celebrate than with a handmade, one-of-a-kind gift? This crochet graduation gnome pattern is the perfect way to show off your creativity and give a thoughtful gift to your loved ones.

❤️ Why you will love the Graduation gnome pattern

  • EASY AND FUN– Easy beginner-friendly stitches and lots of photo tutorials.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE– You can create your own gnome with the colors of your school or university
  • SCRAP YARN BUSTER– Great way to use all the mini balls left from previous projects.

How to crochet a gnome?

Crochet gnomes are no different than crochet toys/ amigurumi.

Therefore the main stitch used to crochet an amigurumi is single crochet. It is a tight stitch that prevents the poly fiber fill to come out of the toy and gives it a sturdy look and helps keep the shape.

Simple steps to crochet a Graduation gnome

  • Body– First, we will start with the body and hat.
  • Additional pieces– Second we will crochet hands, hair, and beard.
  • Assembly the gnome– Afterwards, we will sew all the pieces together.
  • Finishing touches– In the last we will add finishing pieces such as diplomas and hats tassels.

Can a beginner crochet the Graduation gnome?

Of course! The graduation gnome pattern is easy to make. Especially because it is crocheted separately.

What does it mean?

It means that we will crochet the body, then the hat, and the remaining parts such as hands, nose, and hair/beard. Working in small separate pieces will make it easier for a beginner to crochet a gnome.

Tips for beginners

A few tips on how to turn the Graduation gnome pattern extra beginner-friendly.

Use worsted-weight acrylic yarn with a suitable hook. The cotton yarn might be hard to work with if you are a beginner. Some cotton yarns tend to split and it will be easier to miss a stitch.

Use stitch markers to mark your stitches as we will work in continuous rounds. Therefore, you can miscount your stitches.

Use safety pins before you sew the pieces together. Make sure that you like your placement of the hands, nose and etc.

Read the written instructions carefully before you start and make sure that you understand them.

The full gnome is crocheted in continuous rounds, only the cap’s square is crocheted in joined rounds!

How to sew your crochet gnome together?

First, start by sewing the beard onto the gnome. Sew it right below the brim of your hat.

Second, place and sew the nose on top of the beard. Place it in the upper center.

Third, Sew the hands on both sides. Leave 4 stitches between the beard and the hands.

Lastly, take the hat, fill it with poly fiberfill, and sew it on top of your gnome. I didn’t stuff it too much! Leave the last 3-4 rounds as a brim. I sew my hat in a few places just to secure it.

    1. Hello, Margaret
You can use the same pattern but do not make rnd 4 of the hat in BLO work it as a regular sc round. Stuff the hat well and attach a daisy applique. Or you can use the Daisy gnome pattern but change the hook and yarn- use thinner yarn with smaller hook.
