What is the best yarn for crochet cup cozy?
The best yarn for cup cozy in my opinion is cotton yarn, but you can use acrylic yarn as well. For kitchen related projects I always use cotton yarn for my crochet projects. Because cotton yarn do not melt when in touch with hot surfaces.
Of course, as I said you can use acrylic yarn too. There is a lot pattern out there that suggest acrylic yarn if you are going to use the cup cozy for winter and cotton for summer. Again it is up to you.

Overall pattern notes
The cup cozy is worked in short rows. That’s why at the end you will have rectangular shape with a short edge and long edge. See pictures in the pattern instructions
You can crochet it in one color, two or more colors.
If you use acrylic yarn, your yardage and stitch count may change! Please refer to the SIZE section to see how to measure you cup cozy size!
Work the first row in the back bumps of the chain. This way it will be easier for the joining at the end. The back bumps are shown in the picture below.
The pattern is written in US crochet terminology
sc- single crochet
LHDC- linked hald double crochet
sl st- slip stitch
Yarn- Hobbii Friends cotton 8/8, 50gr/1.75 oz, 75m/82yds
Crochet hook – 4mm
8.5 sts x 4 row = 4 cm
The final measurement of the cup cozy is 12 cm wide on each side and 24 cm circumference. It will fit almost all of the standart go to cups.
How to take measurements
Because this cup cozy is crocheted with short rows, we take the measurements a bit differently. For this pattern we will increase at one of the side and decrease at the other. When you lay the piece flat, you will see that at the upper part one of the sides is longer and the other side is shorter.
I cannot find the name of the stitch and cannot decide if it is a single crochet or half double crochet. Because at the end we have 3 loops, like the half double crochet stitches I decided to name the stitch linked half double crochet. If you think I am wrong, name it as you wish!
First leg of a stitch– when we work single crochet or half double crochet at the front side of the stitch we have lines, for the single crochet there are two lines like a v and for the half double crochet we have 3. We will work in the first leg of the stitch ( which is the line, farrest to the top of the stitch. See picture below.
Linked HDC– half double crochet- insert your hook into the first leg of the previous stitch, then insert your hook into the next stitch, grab your yarn, pull through, we have 3 loops on the hook, YO, pull through all the loops on the hook.
How to Increase – work one single crochet in the first stitch, then work one linked half double crochet stitch into the same st,
How to Decrease – insert your hook into the first leg of the previous stitch, insert hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop, ( 3 loops on the hook ), insert your hook into the next stitch and pull a loop ( 4 loops on the hook ), YO, and pull through all the loops.
sc2tog– * insert your hook in the first st and pull up a loop, * rep one more time, ( 3 loops on the hook ), YO, pull through all the loops
Step-by-step written instruction for the cup cozy
Row 1: Ch21, 1 inc in second ch from hook, 1 lhdc in each st to the last 2 sts, 1 dec over the last 2 sts, turn.
For the rest of the rows we will work in the back loops only
Row 2: ch1, sc2tog over the first 2 sts, 1 lhdc in each st to the last st, 2 lhdc in last st, turn
Row 3: ch1, 1 inc in first st, 1 lhdc in same st, 1 hdc in each st to the last 2 sts, 1 dec over the last 2 sts, turn.
Row 4: ch1, sc2tog over the first 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to the last st, 2 lhdc in last st, turn
Repeat rows 3-4, 10 more times. At the end you should have 24 rows in total. Do not fasten off.
After you finish the 24 rows, lay the piece flat, so that the wrong side is facing you. Then fold the short edges of the rectangle to meet each other. Now we will join them. See pictures below.
Joining the cup cozy
After you fold the piece , start joining the short side. In this case we will use the slip stitch joining method. To do that Insert your hook into the front loop of the first piece and into the both loops of the second piece, YO, pull through all the loops. Repeat this for each stitch till the end.
