The daisy granny square is one of my favorite granny square patterns. It is easy and quick to crochet with mediative repetative stitches. In this blog post I will show you step-by-step how to crochet daisy granny square.
Daisy granny square free pattern
I love to crochet granny squares and the daisy granny square is my favorite so far. It is easy and quick to crochet and perfect even for beginner crocheters who want to elevate their skills.
And as I have some projects in progress using the daisy square I crocheted them in various colors, so you can see the different color options.
Materials needed to crochet the daisy granny square
Yarn
For this tutorial I used worsted weight yarn- 24/7 Cotton yarn by Lionbrand, 100gr/3.5 oz, 170m/186yd, 100% Mercerized Cotton in 3 different colors. Yellow yarn ( mustard ) for the center, white yarn for the petals and color C as my main color yarn.
You can use any yarn from your stash, but the size of the final granny square will be different.
Crochet hook
For the daisy square I used 4 mm crochet hook. Use a hook appropriate for the yarn you will choose.
Skill level – advanced beginner
Crochet terms– The pattern uses the US crochet terminology.
Abbreviation
ch(s)- chain(s)
MR- magic ring
FO- fasten off
Dc- double crochet
Hdc- half double crochet
CL- cluster stitch
dc3tog- double crochet three together
ch-3 sp- chain 3 space
sl st- slip stitch
st(s)- stitch(es)
rep- repeat
ch-sp- chain space
– repeat the stitches in the indicated times
rnd- round
Special stitches:
Cluster stitch– make 2 hafl double crochet stitches in the same sticth or space.
dc3tog
YO, insert your hook into the first indicated stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through the first two loops ( 2 loops on the hook ), YO, insert your hook into the second indicated stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through the first 2 loops ( 3 loops on the hook ), YO, insert your hook into the last indicated stitch, YO pull up a loop, YO, pull through the first two loops ( 4 loops on the hook ), YO, pull through all 4 loops.
Working in between the stitches:
Usually, we work our stitches on top of the stitches from the previous round or row, but in this granny square pattern, we will work them between the posts of the stitches, not on top. For example, the first round is made of 12 dc stitches. And for round 2, we will work our stitches, not on top of stitch 1, 2,3, etc.; we will work them between the first and second stitch, second and third stitch, third and fourth stitch, and so on.

Gauge
The granny square measures 12.5 cm x 12.5 cm/ 4.9inch x 4.9 inch
Daisy granny square written instructions
Rnd 1: Start with a MR, ch3
and make 11 dc into the ring. FO. ( 12 dc )
switch to white color yarn
Rnd 2: Insert your hook in any st, ch3, dc2tog into the same st, the first petal is done, now
ch2, dc3tog in next stitch rep all around,
ch2, sl st on top of first st. FO. The flower petals are ready.
The flower center of the daisy granny square is done. Now we will turn it into a square.
switch to main color yarn
Rnd 3: Insert your hook in any ch- sp of rnd 2, ch3, 1dc,ch3, 2dc all in the same ch- sp,
1 CL in next 2 ch- sps,
2dc,ch3,2dc all in next ch-sp, 1 CL in next 2 ch- sps rep 2 more times, sl st on top of first st.
For round 4, we will work the cluster stitches (CL) in the sp between the CL stitches from round 3, as shown in the picture below. And I will refer to them as spaces.
Rnd 4: sl st in next st, sl st in next ch-3 sp,
ch3, 1dc, ch3, 2 dc all in the same sp,
1 CL in each sp till the corner ch-3 sp,
2dc, ch3, 2dc all in next ch-3 sp, 1 CL in each sp till the corner ch-3 sp rep 2 more times,
sl st on top of first st.
Rnd 5: ch2, 1 hdc in each st till the corner ch-3 sp,
2dc,ch3,2dc all in next ch-3 sp, 1 hdc in each st till the corner ch-3 sp rep 2 more times,
2dc,ch3,2dc all in next ch-3 sp, 1 hdc in each st till the corner ch-3 sp, sl st on top of first st.
Rnd 6: ch2, 1 hdc in each st till the corner ch-3 sp, 1hdc,ch3,1hdc all in next ch-3 sp,
1 hdc in each st till the corner ch-3 sp rep 2 more times,
1 hdc, ch3, 1hdc all in next ch-3 sp, 1 hdc in each st till the corner ch-3 sp, sl st on top of first st. Fasten off.
How to make the square bigger or smaller
If you want to make your daisy granny square bigger, repeat round 6. If you’re going to make the granny square with the cluster section only, repeat round 4 until it reaches the desired size.
Crochet projects that use crochet granny squares
You can crochet a granny square hat using the daisy granny square pattern instead of the sunburst granny square.
Crochet summer dress for toddlers. Instead of the sunflower granny square, use the daisy granny square.
