Modern and Stylish Backpack

After a few days me and my sister have a birthday and we want to celebrate it with new design of the website and new video tutorials and written patterns. The first one which I am happy to share with you is our modern and stylish backpack video tutorial. In this video you will find a step by step guide for the bottom, flap, handles and the body of the bag. It is beginner friendly video because when i decide to make 1 for myself I tried 1 week before I get the desired look of the backpack.I know how hard is to find a written pattern or video tutorial in English and this was the main purpose of making and sharing this video with you. Its hard when you want to make something but it is your first time of trying it and the result can be awful and the process is full with headaches. The backpack on the picture is made with t-shirt yarn, but if you cannot find it you can try with super bulky one or ribbon yarn. The pattern is really customisable with the colors and the size you want. In the video I described tips and tricks for the t-shirt yarn and how to customize the sizes if you want to make smaller or bigger one. I hope it will be useful and helpful for you. The video tutorial you can find here:

Material used:

  • 2/3 balls of T- shirt yarn. 650- 700 gr per ball.It depends how thick the yarn is. Colors used are dark grey, light pink and burgundy/ velvet. It is recycled cotton yarn. 90% cotton and 10 % polyester.
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Crochet hook size 10mm , US hook size – N
  • 2 fastener

ABREVIATIONS :

  • Sc – single crochet      ch – chain      rep – repeat
  • inc – increase – Make 2 sc in same stitch       ch-1 sp – chain 1 space
  • hdc – half double crochet beg – beginning
  • st – slip stitch st.- stitch        sts- stitches
  • () – make the indicated stitch between () in one stitch.
  • ** – repeat the stitches between the ** indicated times
  • BLO – back loop only inc’ – increase ( 1sc, ch1, 1 sc )

Special stitch section :

Moss stitch : ch2, make 1 sc in next st, ch1, skip 1 st and make 1 sc in next st.Join with sl.st to the first sc.

Inc’ – increase at the body part – Make 1 sc, ch1, 1 sc all in the same st.

Tips and tricks of the pattern :

  1. Ch2 and the last loop of the joining doesn’t count as a stitch.
  2. When you are crocheting the handles you have to measure them after you stretch them.
  3. Because of the difference of the t- shirt yarn thikness the flap can be bigger or smaller for the bag, so if it is smaller just increase 1 more row or crochet 1 row less.
  4. After you made all the parts of the backpack you have to sew the flap over the handles.
  5. Sew the fastener in the end.

Backpack pattern :

Bottom part of the backpack :

Row 1 : Start by ch 12 and make 1 sc into the third ch of the hook, 1sc in next 8 sts, 3sc in next st.Continue working to the opposite side, 1sc in next 9 sts, 3 sc in next st.(in the beg. of this row we made our first sc into the third loop of the hook, so here you have to make 3sc into the first ch of this beg.ch-2) join with sl.st to the first sc.

Row 2: ch2, 1 sc into the base of initial ch2, 1 sc in next 8 sts * 2sc in next st *- rep.3 times, 1 sc in next 9 sts, * 2 sc in next st *- rep 3 times, join with sl.st to the first sc.

Row 4-20 : ch2, 1 sc in next ch- 1 space * ch1, 1 sc in next ch-1 space *- repeat till the end of the row, ch1 and join with sl.st to the first sc.

Flap of the backpack :

If you use a thicker t- shirt yarn than the flap will be bigger so you can reduce the stitches in the beginning by making 1 or 2 sts less.If it is thiner than you don’t need to reduce the stitches.

Row 1 : Start by ch 12 and make 1 sc into the second ch from the hook and make 1 sc in next 9 sts, 3 sc in next st, continue working to the opposite side and make 1 sc in next 10 sts, ch 2 and turn.

Row 2 : 1 sc into the base of initial ch-2, 1 sc in next 9 sts, inc– rep 3 times, 1 sc into the next 9 sts, 1 sc into the sec ch from turning ch- 2, ch 2 and turn.

Row 3 : 1 hdc into the base of initial ch-2, 1 hdc in next 9 sts, * 1 hd in next st, inc*- rep 3 times,1 sc in next 10 sts, 1 sc into the turning ch- 2, ch2,turn.

Row 4 : 1 sc into the base of initial ch-2, 1 sc in next 8 sts, *1 sc in next 2 sts, inc *- rep 3 times, 1 sc into the next 11 sts, 1 sc into the sec ch from turning ch- 2, ch 2 and turn.

Row 5 : 1 sc into the base of initial ch-2, 1 sc in next 8 sts, *1 sc in next 3 sts, inc *- rep 3 times, 1 sc into the next 13 sts, 1 sc into the sec ch from turning ch- 2.

Change to the third color yarn( velvet )

Row 6 : Don’t turn your work and continue working around the flap. Make 1 sc across the next side of the flap as shown on the picture below: Make 2 sc in the last st of the side than continue working around the flap by making sl.st in the back loop of the sc stitches till the last st.

Handles of the backpack :

Row 1 : Start by ch 3, insert the hook into the second ch from the hook, grab the yarn and pull through the loop ( 2 loops on the hook) than repeat again for the next ch. (3 loops on the hook).

Row 2 : Take off first 2 loops of the hook, than grab the yarn and pull it through the loop on the hook, than insert the hook into the first loop which we took of, grab the yarn again and pull through the loop ( 2 loops on the hook ), repeat 1 more time ( 3 loops on the hook).Repeat row 2 to the desired length. In this pattern I made the handles around 60 cm.

When you are ready with all the parts of the backpack then you have to sew the flap, the handles, the fasteners and in the end you need 2 strings of yarn to put them on the bag.The strings will help us to shape the bag.You must insert them to all the sides of the bag.

I hope you enjoy crocheting this backpack with me.
