Crochet Christmas Snowman Gnome: A Fun DIY Project

When I think about the winter I always remember all the fun I used to have building snowmen with my sister and my friends.

Sadly over the last couple of years, we hardly get any snow!

Therefore, when I started the Crochet Christmas gnome collection I knew that I must have a Snowman gnome as well! I will surely cherish this one for years to come!

In the Christmas collection, I tried to design a few simple and a few more complicated gnomes. My goal is that if you are a beginner you can still manage and create your own Christmas gnome!

Or if you are a bit more experienced crocheter it will still be challenging to work on the more complicated ones. Either way, you will still upgrade your crochet skills and learn something new!

How to crochet a Christmas Snowman Gnome?

First, we will start from the hat and then continue on the body. Throughout the pattern, we will use only one basic stitch such as a single crochet.

When we reach the hat’s brim we will crochet in back and front loops of one round. It will let us crochet the brim and afterward continue on the body.

When we finish the hat and body of the Snowman we will crochet the remaining pieces- hands, nose, beard, and the holly leaves!

When we have all the crochet pieces we will join them together and add the finishing touches to our gnome!

What’s the best yarn for crochet gnomes?

Cotton or Acrylic?

Actually both. Till the beginning of the Crochet Gnome Along I used to use cotton yarn for all of my crochet amigurumi toys. But when I started the Gnome along I had to figure out how big my gnome should be and how to crochet a gnome for beginners!

So I made the first gnome with worsted acrylic yarn! I used a 4mm crochet hook which is smaller than the recommended hook on the label. Using a smaller hook gives you tighter stitches and the final result is better! It prevents holes in your crochet!

Also, if you are a beginner it is better to use an acrylic yarn which is easier to crochet with! Why? Because some of the cotton blends tend to split. Meaning it will be hard for you if you are a beginner!

Why choose cotton yarn for your amigurumi gnomes?

Well, cotton is a natural fibre which makes it safer for smaller children such as toddlers! It is a bit more durable and it won’t get fuzzy! When choosing a cotton yarn it will be better if you use mercerized cotton yarn.

Why?

The mercerized cotton has a nice twist to it. This prevents the yarn from splitting and also gives it a shiny look. Moreover, it makes it easier to work with!

In conclusion, both cotton and acrylic are great for crochet gnomes and amigurumi toys! In my opinion, it depends on what you feel comfortable with!

The best advice I can give you is to use an appropriate crochet hook with your yarn weight and even go a size down if you crochet loosely! You will see a tremendous difference once you switch your hook size!

The amigurumi and crochet gnomes will be more sturdy and they will stay in shape easily!

Crochet Terms: This pattern is written in US crochet terms!

Crochet Construction: We will crochet the snowman from top to bottom. Starting from the hat and continuing onto the body. This means the whole snowman gnome is crocheted in one piece.

Crochet Technique: The Snowman gnome is crocheted in continuous rounds. It means when you reach the end of your round you won’t be joining it with SS. You will continue crocheting over the first stitch of your previous round!

PRO TIP: Use a stitch marker or a piece of yarn to mark your first stitch!

Stuffing your gnome: It is important to stuff your gnome well, but don’t overdo it. Otherwise, your fiberfill will come out from your stitches. It will look unpleasant!

  1. JUST made this Snowman Gnome! How adorable ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I added “feet” using the “paws” from the Cat Gnome pattern–using white yarn, inserting a small piece of cardboard for the bottom of each foot. They give the illusion that the snowman is “chubbier” than he is. I’m having so much fun with your patterns! Happy Monday Ladies 🤗
