Summer Gnome- the Ice Cream gnome pattern overview
The newest gnome added to the gnome crochet along is the Ice cream gnome pattern. If you haven’t heard of the gnome CAL you can read about it here and find all of the previous crochet gnome patterns listed in the post.
What is new?
First, let’s talk about the yarn. All of our previous crochet gnomes were made with worsted-weight yarn.
Unfortunately, I ran out of colors and switched to sport-weight cotton yarn. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that you can’t still use worsted weight yarn, but be aware that your gnome will be bigger.
I suggest you use sport weight, fine, or DK weight yarn with a crochet hook 2mm/2.25mm or 2.5mm. Therefore, if you use thicker yarn there will be a slight difference in the size.
The Ice cream summer gnome is crocheted in a few steps. We will crochet the cone, the cream, and the body separately. Afterward, we will join them and turn them into an ice cream cone gnome.

How to customize your summer gnome?
The possibilities are endless. Here are a few suggestions on how to customize your summer gnome and create a unique gift for your loved ones.
As you can see the cream of the ice cream is made in a swirl. It gives you the opportunity to crochet your swirl in 2 colors. For example, you can make it vanilla and chocolate using white and brown colors for the swirl.
You can also change the ice cream gnome’s body and create your favorite flavor. Why not add some beads as sprinkles?

The pattern is written in US crochet terms.
The Ice cream gnome is crocheted in a few steps. First, we will crochet the ice cream cone. Afterward, we will crochet the swirling cream and then we will crochet the gnome’s body and remaining parts.
I used sport weight 100% mercerized cotton yarn. I suggest you use a similar yarn. If you cannot find it you can use fine weight or DK weight yarn with a smaller hook such as 2.25mm or 2.5mm.
Here is a great online site where you can check for a substitute yarn of the one I am using- Yarnsub.com
Some yarns that I would recommend: are Stylecraft Special DK, Paintbox Simply DK, and Hobbii Cotton 8/4.

Ice cream gnome’s cream
We will work in back loops only throughout the cream pattern.
-with blue color
Row 1: CH 25, SC in 2nd from your hook, SC in each across, CH 1, turn (24)
Row 2: inc 1, SC in next 21, dec 1, CH 1, turn (24)
Row 3: dec 1, SC in next 21, inc 1, CH 1, turn (24)
Repeat rows 2 and 3 alternating them till you reach row 28
Row 28: inc 1, SC in next 21, dec 1. FO. Leave a longer tail for sewing (24)
You will have a parallelogram (kind of rectangle/rhombus) shape.
Now take both short sides and sew them together. It will turn into a swirl.
After that close both sides with a needle going through some of the rows. See pics below. I didn’t fill mine with poly fiber fill.
