Appliques crochet baby blanket- Undersea sweetness

The story :

Are you looking for an easy but stunning blanket, then “Undersea sweetness “ baby blanket with appliques pattern is the perfect one.

I started my design journey with my 1st blanket design- It was a minion-inspired baby blanket that was very popular in 2015. My passion is to design blankets of all ranges, although I am concentrated on making a baby blanket.

I found them funnier to make. I love making granny squares and then turn them into animals/flowers/animation characters square, which allows me to design 1 square and then crochet it all around the house as, at the moment, I don’t have my craft space.

There was a time that I wanted to try something different from the granny square, and I came up with the idea of making a solid one-stitch blanket and decorate it with some appliques. There are some talented designers; you can check them here.

The 1st is my all time favourite and maybe you know her and her work – It is Nellas cottage https://nellascottage.patternbyetsy.com/

Notes of Undersea blanket :

The blanket itself is made in simple wave stitch, that you can crochet while lying on couch and watching tv. For funnier look you can use different animal appliques as I did. They will make the blanket more colorful and more interesting for the baby to play with. You can play and learn with your toddler. You can show the baby different sea creatures, explain where they live and make learning easy and fun.

With that blanket your toddler can expand his imagination and learn about sea animals and the life in ocean. You can find combined pdf pattern which includes all of the appliques + the written instructions of the blanket itself or separated pdf pattern of each applique in my Etsy and Ravelry shop here https://www.etsy.com/shop/Passionatecrafterr?ref=seller-platform-mcnav

Materials :

  1. DK or worsted/ARAN weight yarn- I used HOBFY CICIBEBE cake yarn – 150gr/540m/acrylic yarn
  2. Paintbox Simply DK –Light Caramel – I used 1/3 of 1 ball
  3. Crochet hook size 4,5mm- US crochet hook size “G”
  4. Tapestry needle to weave ends in
  5. A pair of scissors

I used light caramel color of Paintbox Simply DK yarn as I wanted to make my blanket look like seaside if you wish you can make it only with blue color cake yarn or with 1 color blue yarn it depends all on you and

your preferences. If you do not have cake yarn or do not have a craft store that you can purchase it from, you can use different shades of blue to make your blanket look as mine. But let’s say that it is more comfortable to use cake yarn as you do not need to change color and you will have less ends to weave in( For me it is very important as I do not like that part of the job ).

GAUGE: The gauge is not important for that blanket.

Finished measurements of the blanket if you use similar yarn and hook is 75 cm X 75 cm – 30 inch X 30 inch. If you use worsted weight and bigger hook for example 5,5mm/ I hook, your blanket will turn around 36 inch X 36 inch.

Blanket pattern instructions:

I used stitch combination that turns into wave and makes the blanket to look as waving sea. Each wave is made of 12 sts sequence. At the end I made half wave so the blanket finishes with the last wave pointing up. If you would like to make the blanket bigger you should start by making foundation chain which is multiple of 12 + 5. For example if you want to have 15 waves you should start by chaining 12 x 15=180 chains + 5.

Row 1: Start with dc in 4th ch from hook, (prev ch 3 will count as dc), { *  skip 1 ch, dc in next ch* rep 2 times, dc in next ch, 5 dc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs,*  skip 1 ch, dc in next ch* rep 2 times } rep from { to } 15 times , dc in last ch.

Row 2: ch 1, sc in base of initial ch-1, sc in each st around, sc in 3rd ch of trng ch3.

Row 3: ch 3  (count as dc ), { *  skip 1 ch, dc in next ch* rep 2 times, dc in next ch, 5 dc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs,*  skip 1 ch, dc in next ch* rep 2 times } rep from { to } 15 times , dc in last ch.

Row 4: Repeat row 2

Repeat row 2-3 till you reach your desired length. I made 77 rows .

Color scheme of the blanket:

Row 1-10: Light caramel

Row 11: blue (cake yarn)

Row 12-14: light caramel

Row 15: blue (cake yarn)

Row 16-17: light caramel

Row 18: blue (cake yarn)

Row 19: light caramel

Row 20-77: blue (cake yarn)

    1. I am having a lot of trouble understanding your direction, or lack of them.
You give directions about how to count to make the width that you want for your blanket.
However….Row 1 starts off with a dc in the 4th ch from the hook. Then has a ( and talks about a previous ch 3. Where does that come from? Should I ch3 after completing the foundation stitches?

I have started this twice already and am going to try one more time. I am awaiting your reply before I start. If it doesn’t work this time, I’ll give up and I won’t be happy.

        1. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but I cant make sense of this wave pattern. You cannot do row 3 because you are decreasing your stiches with each row when you keep having to miss chains. This is causing the wave to curl up.

          1. I had the same issue. The directions have 6 dc btw the 5 dc in 1 chain. There can only be 4.

Try this… I chained 144+5 for my foundation row; Row 1 – dc 4th ch from hook, sk ch, dc next ch, sk next ch, dc next 2 ch, (* 5 dc in next ch, dc next 2 ch, sk a ch then dc next ch 4 times*) repeat btw *. After last ch with 5 dc, ch in next 2 dc, sk next ch and dc next ch 2 times, dc last ch. ch 1 and turn

Row 2 – sc in ea ch across. Chain 3, turn.

Work ROW 3 the same as ROW 1 except at the beginning of the row. After the turning ch, dc in next ch. then continue the same as row 1.It seems to be coming out good now.

  1. You have not listed The full colour sequence you used which the blanket itself. I don’t want a full beige and one tone blue I would like to make one with different tones like you have made what sequence did you use please xx

  2. I cannot find the directions for making the whale, starfish, octopus, and fish. Where can I find these

  3. Hi, first of all thanks for sharing your pattern. In making the crab applique I believe there’s a mistake in round 7, doing it as written gives you 44 stitches, not 42. I made it omitting the second “2 hdc in next stitch” just before the “sc in next 11 stitches”, and it works out correctly then.
