There is something about crochet pumpkins that makes me want to make a new one every fall! They are quick to crochet, fun to customize, and one of my favorite ways to add a little handmade touch to my fall and Thanksgiving decor. This year, I wanted to create a pumpkin with lots of texture but still keep the construction simple. That is how the Flower Puff Pumpkin came to life!

The star of this crochet pumpkin is definitely the texture. Raised stitches travel vertically around the pumpkin, creating beautiful braided sections with little flower-like details in between. Once the pumpkin is stuffed and shaped, those textured sections really pop and give it that cozy, chunky look.

And although the finished pumpkin looks intricate, you don’t need complicated construction to make it. The pumpkin is worked from the bottom up in the round, so there is no rectangle to seam together at the end.

A Textured Crochet Pumpkin for Fall

One of my favorite things about this pattern is how different it can look simply by changing the yarn and color.

I made mine using Mary Maxim Starlette in Cottonwood, Medium Taupe, and Cardinal for a classic fall palette. The neutral shades give the pumpkin a cozy farmhouse feel, while the deep red makes the texture stand out beautifully.

But I couldn’t resist experimenting with cake yarn too!

I also made a version using Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes, which lets the color changes do all the work for you. Because of the raised Flower Puff texture, a self-striping or color-changing yarn can give every pumpkin a slightly different look.

That makes this a great pattern for using those beautiful yarn cakes in your stash when you aren’t quite sure what to make with them.

Choosing Colors for Your Crochet Pumpkins

Don’t feel like you have to stick with traditional orange!

I especially love this design in cream, taupe, burgundy, rust, mustard, olive, and warm brown. The texture makes neutral pumpkins just as interesting as colorful ones.

For a more modern fall display, try several shades of cream and beige. For traditional autumn decor, mix burnt orange, deep red, mustard, and brown. And if you love farmhouse-style decor, cream and taupe pumpkins finished with a natural wooden stem and twine look beautiful together.

This is also a great stash-busting project. Make each pumpkin in a different color and you’ll have your own little handmade pumpkin patch.

Stitches Used in the Flower Puff Pumpkin

The Flower Puff Pumpkin gets its beautiful raised, braided texture from a combination of puff stitches, V-puff stitches, back post double crochet stitches, and decrease stitches. While some of these stitches may look a little intimidating at first, they are much easier once you see how they are worked.

The pattern includes written instructions for each special stitch below, and I have also created a full step-by-step video tutorial where I demonstrate each stitch slowly and show you exactly where to insert your hook. Pattern Notes

• The pattern is worked in joined rounds.
• Each size pattern is written separately.
• The initial ch1 or ch2 doesn’t count as a stitch.
• When stuffing your pumpkin do not overdue it.
• Check Special stitch section before you start with the pattern.
• You can use whatever yarn you have in your stash with suitable hook size. Keep in mind this will change the size of your pumpkin.
• Thicker yarn + bigger hook= Bigger Pumpkins
• Thinner yarn+ smaller hook= Smaller Pumpkins.

CONSTRUCTION:

The Flower Puff Pumpkin is worked from the bottom up in joined rounds, using textured stitches to create the beautiful raised, braided sections that give the pumpkin its distinctive shape. Once the body is complete, the pumpkin is stuffed to the desired firmness. The top opening is then gathered and securely closed using a yarn needle, creating a neat finish and completing the pumpkin shape.

SIZING TIPS:

The Flower Puff Pumpkin can easily be made in different sizes without changing the pattern. Simply change the yarn weight and hook size while following the same instructions and stitch counts. Keep in mind that changing the yarn weight will also change the amount of yarn needed.

For a smaller pumpkin, try a #3 DK or lightweight yarn with a 4–4.5 mm hook. For the standard size, use the recommended #4 medium worsted-weight yarn with a 5.5 mm hook. For a larger, chunkier pumpkin, use #5 bulky yarn with approximately a 6.5–7 mm hook, or #6 super bulky yarn with an 8–10 mm hook.

You can also experiment with holding two strands of worsted-weight yarn together and using a larger hook. This is a great way to create a bigger pumpkin while combining two colors for a unique marled effect.

Tip: Choose a hook that creates a fairly firm fabric so the fiberfill does not show through the stitches, but avoid crocheting too tightly—the puff stitches and raised braided texture should remain full and well defined.

Making the indent (Optional)

Take the long yarn tail and the tapestry needle and go from top centre through the pumpkin and pull from bottom centre. Repeat this a few times. Pull tight to form a dent in the middle. Secure with a knot and weave your ends in.

Adding cinnamon or wood sticks

Option 1: Add the cinnamon stick right before you close the top, wrapping the pumpkin around the stick. Use a hot glue gun to secure it. Once it is glued, make the dent in the middle.

Option 2: Add the cinnamon stick after you make the dent in the middle, and use a hot glue gun to secure it.

Once you are done with the stem, take some ribbon or twine and wrap it around the stem. Cut and tie with a bow or knot.
